Gender differences in direction...

Men and women tend to describe directions in different ways. Different language is used to describe and understand directions.

Deborah Saucier, a professor of neuroscience at the University of Lethbridge in Canada, examined these differences in phrasing in her 2003 study. her findings were:

'After studying a map and being asked how to get to various locations, women typically give directions that feature landmarks and left and right turns. Men, on the other hand, employ compass directions and distances measured in minutes or miles.'

This has been linked to prehistoric times as men and women collected different types of food and so remembered how to get home in different ways!

This research made me more curious about other people and their personal experiences, so I compiled a questionnaire and handed it out:

 Getting Lost
Gender:
1. On a scale of 1-10 (1 being never and 10 being constantly) How often do you find yourself lost?
2. If you have been somewhere once can you generally find it again?
3. What strategies do you use to keep yourself from getting lost?
4. Do you use satnavs/map phone apps?
5. Do you know someone with an extremely bad sense of direction?
6. If so please give an example
7. Are they male or female?
8. Why do you think this person gets lost so much?
